Snake sightings in Limassol pools raise safety concerns (VIDEO)

Rescuer warns that small snakes in pools are rarely alone.

Residents in the Limassol district are being advised to check their swimming pools after several reports of snakes seeking water during the dry season.

Snake handler Yiannis Angeli said he was recently called to a home in Agios Tychonas, where a whip snake (Hierophis cypriensis) was found in a pool skimmer. A day earlier, a larger whip snake was seen in the same pool before escaping, leading to concerns about a possible nest. Angeli confirmed that suspicion.

“Always check the skimmers before getting into the pool,” Angeli said in a social media post. “Snakes have started hatching from their eggs. When you see small snakes, they are never alone.”

Angeli explained that this summer’s drought and the wildfire that devastated the Limassol mountains have forced reptiles into residential areas in search of water. Among them is the viper, Cyprus’s only venomous snake, which can be dangerous to humans.
