Three teenagers are in custody and police are actively searching for a fourth suspect following a violent assault that left a 47-year-old Turkish Cypriot man fighting for his life in a Nicosia hospital.
The suspects, all aged 18, were detained under judicial warrants during the early hours of Monday morning. According to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), all three individuals hold Swedish passports, though their ethnic backgrounds are listed as Albanian, Chilean, and Iraqi.
The incident took place on Sunday in the Famagusta district. The victim sustained critical injuries during the attack and was transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains intubated in intensive care.
The three detained teenagers are scheduled to appear before the Famagusta District Court on Monday, where investigators will request formal remand orders to keep them in custody. Concurrently, local authorities stated that they have identified a fourth suspect connected to the assault and are actively working to track them down.
The assault has drawn attention across the green line. Tufan Erhurman, the Turkish Cypriot political leader, made a public statement regarding the event online, confirming that he has formally requested an official update on the investigation through the bicommunical technical committee on crime.
The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is leading the ongoing inquiry into the case, which is currently being treated as an assault causing grievous bodily harm.
