A Cypriot swimmer died Monday morning after disappearing in the waters off Finikoudes Beach, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation by authorities.
According to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Larnaca, the swimmer was reported missing at 10:56 a.m. on August 4. In response, the JRCC activated the National Search and Rescue Plan known as "NEARCHOS," which coordinates emergency efforts for maritime incidents.
A speedboat from the Port and Marine Police and a vessel from the Larnaca District Administration, carrying a team of lifeguards, were dispatched to the area. The lifeguards located the swimmer unconscious in the sea shortly after the search began.
Emergency personnel transported the individual to Larnaca General Hospital via an ambulance from the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY). Despite resuscitation efforts, doctors at the hospital confirmed the swimmer’s death.
Authorities have not released the swimmer’s identity. No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident were immediately available.
The JRCC, responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations in Cyprus' maritime and aeronautical regions, routinely activates the NEARCHOS plan during life-threatening incidents at sea.
