Cyprus authorities have announced the recall of 664 SAAB vehicles fitted with defective TAKATA driver airbags, following information received from General Motors.
According to the Department of Road Transport, the airbags may malfunction if deployed, with the inflator at risk of rupturing and sending metal fragments into the vehicle cabin. Officials warned that this defect could lead to serious injuries or fatalities.
Owners of affected vehicles are being instructed to replace the faulty airbags through licensed vehicle technicians. The Department said the required technical assistance and replacement parts can be arranged for the repairs.
A list containing the affected registration and chassis numbers has been published on the government website and the Department of Road Transport portal. Registered letters and SMS notifications have already been sent to owners using the contact details recorded in the Department’s system.
Authorities said vehicle owners have eight months to complete the replacement process and submit the original repair certificates to the Department of Road Transport as proof that the work has been carried out.
Failure to comply within the deadline will result in the suspension of the vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate and registration licence. Vehicles that have not completed the required repairs will also be barred from undergoing technical inspection until the issue is resolved.
The Department is advising owners not to use the affected vehicles until the defective airbag has been replaced, describing the matter as a serious road safety risk affecting drivers, passengers and other road users.
