Police have charged a 40-year-old man after his 13-year-old son was seriously injured while driving the family’s car on a rural road in Athienou over the weekend.
The man, who authorities say is the owner of the vehicle, was arrested on a court warrant as investigators looked into how the teenager got hold of the car and ended up behind the wheel. Police say the father was responsible for the car’s custody and should never have allowed a minor, especially one without a license, to drive it.
Larnaca Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou said the father was questioned, charged in writing, and will be called to appear before the Larnaca District Court at a later stage. He faces possible charges related to unsafe custody of the vehicle, allowing someone without a license to drive, and allowing the car to be operated without insurance.
The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday on a dirt road in the Larnaca district. According to police, the 13-year-old lost control of the car, which veered off the road, struck several trees, and overturned in a nearby field.
The teenager was rushed first to Larnaca General Hospital and later transferred to Makarios Hospital in Strovolos, where he remains under treatment. Doctors told police the boy’s condition is serious but not life-threatening.
The investigation is ongoing.
