Inflationary pressures caused by geopolitical developments affecting the region have not spared Cyprus’ private education sector.
Rising operating costs, from energy and rents to the services offered by private schools, are now translating into higher tuition fees.
According to a Kathimerini survey, tuition fees for the 2026-2027 school year are increasing across all levels of education, kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools, by an average of 6%.
For a growing number of families in Cyprus, choosing a private school has become an alternative to public education. Data collected by Kathimerini shows that in the districts of Nicosia and Limassol, the percentage of students attending private schools reaches almost 20% of the student population.
However, this choice comes at a significant cost.
As the number of private school options has increased over the years, tuition fees now vary greatly depending on the district, while the total cost extends far beyond the basic tuition fee.
Registration fees, books, uniforms and additional charges can significantly increase the final bill. In some cases, the cost of private education can even approach the equivalent of an average annual salary.
Indicative figures published by the Ministry of Education show that a seven-year secondary education programme at a private school can cost families up to €150,000.
Currently, Cyprus has 280 private schools across all education levels:
- 198 kindergartens
- 42 primary schools
- 40 secondary schools
Limassol remains the most expensive district
Limassol continues to be the most expensive district for private education, as it was during the previous school year, narrowly followed by Nicosia.
The high cost is linked to the rapid growth the city has experienced over the past decade.
Higher salaries, the expansion of certain industries and the arrival of a significant number of foreign residents with greater purchasing power have created the conditions for higher tuition fees.
Kindergartens: From €165 to €1,500 a month
The biggest differences in pricing appear in private kindergartens.
The cheapest option can be found in the Famagusta district, where monthly fees start at around €165.
At the other end of the scale, in Limassol, monthly fees can reach as high as €1,500.
According to Ministry of Education data, Limassol is the most expensive district, with average monthly kindergarten fees of around €500.
It is followed by:
- Nicosia: €345 per month
- Paphos: €330 per month
- Larnaca: €310 per month
- Famagusta: €275 per month
Nicosia has the largest number of private kindergartens, with 93, followed by:
- Limassol: 61
- Larnaca: 32
- Paphos: 7
- Famagusta: 4
Primary school costs can reach €70,000
Cyprus has 42 private primary schools, with fees varying significantly between districts.
One of the cheaper options is found in Nicosia, where six years of primary education can cost around €5,500 in total.
However, in Limassol, some private schools charge up to €70,000 for all six years of primary education.
Limassol has the highest number of private primary schools, with 20, followed by:
- Nicosia: 13
- Larnaca: 4
- Paphos: 4
- Famagusta: 1
Average annual costs by district are:
- Limassol: €10,000
- Nicosia: €8,000
- Paphos: €7,500
- Larnaca: €6,500
- Famagusta: €5,500
Secondary education is where costs soar
Private secondary education is the most expensive stage, with fees rising significantly compared with kindergarten and primary school.
Most private schools offer seven years of secondary education, compared with six years in public schools, increasing the overall cost.
Fees also tend to rise as students move into higher grades.
Limassol offers both the most expensive and some of the most affordable options, with total costs ranging from around €33,000 to €151,000, depending on the school and additional programs.
Average annual tuition fees by district are:
- Limassol: €11,500
- Nicosia: €9,300
- Paphos: €9,000
- Larnaca: €8,500
- Famagusta: €8,000
What pushes prices higher?
Private school fees depend on several factors, including additional programmes and services.
Kindergarten fees increase when parents choose:
full-day programmes,
additional supervision,
meal services.
In secondary schools, international programs can significantly raise costs.
Programs such as A-Levels and IGCSE, which many students pursue to improve their chances of entering recognized universities abroad, add a considerable financial burden for families.
The final bill can also increase due to:
- external examinations,
- books,
- uniforms,
- extracurricular activities.
However, some families may receive discounts through scholarships or reduced fees when more than one child from the same family attends the same school.
The bigger picture
Private education in Cyprus is becoming an increasingly popular choice for families, but it is also becoming a much more expensive one.
With inflation pushing up operating costs, parents are now facing a difficult calculation: how much are they willing, and able, to pay for an alternative education path?
