A Turkish Airlines plane sparked brief concern Monday night when it flew at a low altitude over the Republic-controlled areas, according to several residents who reported seeing the aircraft around 9:10 p.m.
The flight had taken off from the airport in occupied Tymbou and was heading to Turkey when it appeared to drift over the free areas for several minutes. Residents said the plane’s unusually low height made it hard to miss.
Flight-tracking data later showed the aircraft’s route crossing over the area, matching the accounts shared by citizens.
Authorities noted that this is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Aircraft departing from the occupied north occasionally pass over the free areas during winter months, usually due to weather conditions that force pilots to adjust their course.
There were no reports of danger or emergency linked to Monday night’s flight.
