A month-long policing campaign at Lady's Mile and Curium beaches has resulted in 12 arrests, according to the SBA Police, with officers continuing patrols throughout the busy coastal areas.
The most recent arrest took place last weekend when a 34-year-old Bulgarian man, who told police he was homeless, was stopped while driving under the influence of narcotics.
A search of his vehicle uncovered a small quantity of drugs believed to be for personal use, along with several prohibited weapons, including pointed kitchen knives, a scythe and a wooden baton. He was taken into custody and remains on remand ahead of a court appearance scheduled for July 6.
During the operation, officers also reported 20 motorists for minor traffic violations and issued 60 written warnings covering road traffic and powerboat offences. Two people were referred to the Akrotiri Area Office for conducting business without the required licence.
Police estimate that more than 7,000 people visit Lady's Mile and Curium beaches each weekend day. Chief Inspector Toby Demetriou said Operation Guardian has already produced encouraging results, with officers maintaining a visible presence that has helped keep visitors safe while reassuring those using the beaches.
The SBA Police Marine Unit has also taken part in the operation, carrying out inspections on 113 boats and jet skis.
