The U.S. Embassy in Cyprus kicked off Independence Day festivities early this year with a vibrant celebration on July 1 at the University of Cyprus, blending American tradition with a creative homage to the state of New Jersey. The event, attended by Cypriot and international dignitaries, Americans living abroad, and friends of the U.S., marked America’s 249th birthday with patriotic pride and unmistakable Jersey style.
The theme of the evening was clear: the Garden State. The venue’s colonnade was transformed into a tribute to New Jersey’s legendary figures, including Meryl Streep, Shaquille O’Neal, and Harriet Tubman. Tables were adorned with paddle-shaped fans featuring none other than Albert Einstein, who spent his final years in Princeton, New Jersey. Along one side of the venue, a striking display of all 50 U.S. state flags waved proudly, a colorful reminder of the diversity and unity that defines America.
The celebration featured remarks from U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus Julie S. Davis, who reflected on America’s recent achievements and the important role Cyprus has played during her tenure in the region. Recently appointed Chargé d’Affaires to Ukraine, Davis acknowledged the significance of Cyprus in her diplomatic journey and shared a light-hearted moment about how glad she was to be back on the island for the event.
President Nikos Christodoulides also addressed the crowd, reflecting on the strength of U.S.-Cyprus relations and sharing personal anecdotes from his own time studying in the United States. He fondly noted his family ties to New Jersey, drawing cheers from the crowd as he raised his glass in a toast to the enduring partnership between the two nations.
In a moment that stirred patriotic emotion, many in the crowd stood with hands on hearts as the “Star-Spangled Banner” played, evoking a shared sense of pride among Americans and Philamericans alike, as the Colors were presented by U.S. Marines.
As the sun set, the U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band took the stage and, true to form, delivered an electrifying performance. Their set included New Jersey icons such as Jon Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer and Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody, getting guests dancing and singing along. Cocktails at the event were inspired by New Jersey landmarks, adding a tasteful touch of Americana to the evening.
Beyond the speeches and music, guests enjoyed interactive attractions like a photo booth with colonial-era costumes and backdrops featuring New Jersey’s state capitol. A 360-degree photo booth also drew eager participants capturing festive moments. Before departing, attendees were gifted a small package of salt water taffy, a beloved treat from the Jersey Shore.
Happy Independence Day, America!
