Unknown vandals targeted the offices of the Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Limassol late Wednesday night, causing significant damage and spray-painting threatening slogans, one of which defaced a photograph of former President Nicos Anastasiades.
According to police, the perpetrators forced their way into the building, damaged furniture, scattered documents, and covered the walls with abusive and politically charged graffiti. A photo inside the office, believed to be of Anastasiades, was also spray-painted, adding to the symbolism of the attack.
The incident has sparked strong condemnation from party leaders, who described it as a violent act meant to intimidate and silence. DISY President Annita Demetriou didn’t hold back in her statement.
“Our country was dragged into the mire of fanaticism last night,” Demetriou said. “Forces of darkness attacked our headquarters. They breached the entrance, destroyed furniture and documents, and wrote threatening slogans on the walls. But the Democratic Rally will not be afraid, will not be silenced, and will not stop fighting with seriousness, responsibility and rationality.”
Police are investigating the incident, which is being treated as politically motivated vandalism. No arrests have been made so far.
DISY parliamentary spokesman Nikos Tornaritis also spoke out, calling the attack “an act of hatred and insanity.”
“This was an attack on democracy itself,” he said. “Unfortunately, such unprecedented acts are a result of the political climate of tension and division that some are trying to impose on our country. But our message is clear: democracy does not bend. The Democratic Rally will never stay silent when it comes to defending what it believes in.”
