Wednesday heatwave: Yellow alert issued as inland highs hold at 40°C

Official Met Office warning active from 14:00 to 16:30 today as summer heat stays locked in.

Newsroom

The persistent seasonal low-pressure system, now combined with a warm hot air mass, is keeping midsummer conditions firmly locked across the region. While we are well clear of last week's extreme mid-40s spikes, conditions are hot enough that the Department of Meteorology has issued an official Yellow High Temperature Warning for this afternoon.

The warning remains active between 14:00 and 16:30, especially for vulnerable groups, including the elderly and young children, as central inland temperatures touch 40°C.

Inland areas bear the focal point of today's temperature alert at 40°C. Along the coast, the west and north shorelines sit at a milder 34°C, while the remaining coastal strips hold steady around 36°C. Up in the higher Troodos peaks, temperatures offer a much fresher retreat at 29°C.

Winds will start off out of the northwest to northeast, shifting gradually to a southeasterly to southwesterly direction at a light to moderate 3 to 4 Beaufort. Along the western coast, expect the breeze to swing to a light-to-moderate northwesterly flow during the afternoon. The sea will maintain a slight chop throughout the day.

Conditions will stay predominantly clear through the evening and overnight hours across all districts.

Winds will transition to a northwesterly flow (occasionally leaning northeasterly), blowing at a light 3 Beaufort with brief, localized bumps to 3–4 Beaufort. The sea will settle back into a calm to slight state, making for a quiet summer night.

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday: The current weather pattern holds completely steady with mostly clear, sun-filled skies each day. No significant fluctuations are on the horizon through Saturday, keeping temperatures hovering slightly above seasonal averages.

Take extra care during the peak afternoon hours today, keep hydrated, and check in on elderly neighbors or young family members while the yellow warning is active.
