Big changes are coming to education in Paralimni. President Nikos Christodoulides announced the signing of contracts for a brand-new secondary school, complete with a sports facility, during a visit to the existing Paralimni Gymnasium, marking the start of the new school year. The project will cost around €15 million.

“This is one of the largest secondary public schools in Cyprus, and this area is a top priority for our government,” Christodoulides told reporters. “We’ve already invested €5.5 million to upgrade the current school, and now we’re taking the next step with a completely new building.”

The president highlighted that education and healthcare remain his administration’s top priorities. Over the past two and a half years, classrooms have been modernized, curricula updated, career guidance strengthened, and air conditioning installed in 45% of classrooms, up from just 10% when he took office. Famagusta District now ranks among the highest in the country for air-conditioned schools.

Christodoulides also met students to hear their thoughts and ideas for improving schools even further, showing the government’s hands-on approach to education.

On technical education, he pointed to record enrollments in pilot technical secondary schools this year, surpassing 2013 levels. “Wherever there’s demand, we’ll build more technical schools,” he said. “Ideally, every municipality and community would have one; that’s our plan, with careful design and planning.”

The new gymnasium promises not just upgraded classrooms but a modern space for sports and extracurricular activities, a boost for students, families, and the wider community. For Paralimni, it’s a €15 million investment in the future of local youth and a clear signal that education is high on the government’s agenda.
