Unstable air mass brings 28°C temperatures, afternoon hail, and weekend thunderstorms

Pop-up storms hit the mountains and inland areas while Force 5 wind gusts affect windward coasts.

Newsroom

Now, I know y'all are hurting about that lost four-day weekend! You had yesterday off for the holiday, you came back to work today, and now Mother Nature decides to drop an unstable air mass on us through Monday? That is just straight-up disrespectful.

Today starts off with a little morning cloud cover and isolated rain out in the west and north. But do NOT let that gentle morning fool you! Come afternoon, the whole sky is gonna turn mainly cloudy, bringing local rain, thunderstorms, and actual hail through the mountains, the inland plains, and out west. On top of that, winds from the southwest to northwest will be blowing at 3 to 4 Beaufort, kicking up to a strong Force 5 along windward beaches while the sea gets slightly rough.

Here is how today's thermal situation breaks down across the island:

Inland, southern, and eastern coasts: Reaching 28°C. Comfortable, but keep your head on a swivel for those afternoon storm clouds.

Remaining coastal areas: Sitting at 26°C.

Higher mountain peaks: Dropping all the way down to a chilly 17°C, so if you get caught in a hail storm up there, you gonna feel it.

Tonight, the sky calms down just a little bit, turning partly cloudy with a few isolated showers sneaking along the beaches. Winds shift around from the northwest to northeast, while the northern coast gets a gentle 3 Beaufort breeze from the southeast. The sea settles down nicely to calm or slightly rough.

The outlook: Thunderstorms stick aound straight through Monday

I wish I had better news for your weekend, but this unstable air mass is staying right where it is! Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies right through Monday, bringing rounds of local showers and pop-up thunderstorms whenever it feels like it.

The mercury is going nowhere fast. Temperatures are holding right at these same levels, staying slightly below the seasonal average. Stay dry, keep your umbrellas handy, and enjoy whatever part of the weekend you can.
