Greece’s Economy Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis was unanimously elected president of the Eurogroup Thursday, a high-profile achievement that signals Greece’s return as a leader in European economic policy.
Pierrakakis, who starts his two-and-a-half-year term on December 12, outlined priorities including a Savings and Investment Union, digital transformation, and sharing Greece’s “experience of fiscal stability” to help make Europe more competitive and resilient.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the election “a day of pride for the country,” highlighting Greece’s journey from financial crisis to European leadership. Greek officials described the move as recognition of years of reforms and fiscal responsibility.
The Eurogroup coordinates economic policy among eurozone finance ministers and prepares monthly summit meetings, putting Pierrakakis in a central role shaping the eurozone’s agenda.
