Greek shipowners turn to Cyprus flag as registry gains momentum

Officials say more vessels are switching to the Cypriot Ship Register, drawn by faster procedures, stable taxation, and round-the-clock maritime support.

More Greek-owned ships are choosing to sail under the Cyprus flag, in a growing trend that Cypriot officials say is strengthening the island’s already significant role in global shipping.

The shift was highlighted at the Posidonia 2026 shipping exhibition in Athens, where officials noted that the Cypriot Ship Register is increasingly being seen as a practical and attractive option for shipowners looking for stability, speed, and fewer administrative hurdles.

For many in the industry, the appeal comes down to cost, predictability, and how quickly a vessel can be registered.

Cyprus offers a system that does not charge registration or mortgage fees, while its tax framework is based on the size of a ship rather than fluctuating profits, a structure officials say gives companies more certainty when planning long-term operations.

Another key factor is flexibility. The Cypriot register is open to international shipowners and is known for fast processing times, something that can make a big difference in a highly competitive global industry where delays can be costly.

Speaking at the event, officials also pointed to Cyprus’ maritime safety framework, including updated anti-piracy rules designed to protect ships under its flag.

Eliza Neophytou, a maritime affairs officer at the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, said one of the less visible but important advantages is the support system available to vessels at all times.

Ships registered in Cyprus, she noted, have access to 24-hour emergency assistance if needed, a service that adds an extra layer of confidence for crews and operators working across international waters.

The growing number of Greek-owned vessels joining the register adds to Cyprus’ position as one of the more active shipping hubs in Europe, reinforcing a sector that remains a key pillar of the island’s economy.

For Cyprus, officials say, it is not just about expanding numbers; it is about building trust in a flag that continues to compete successfully on the global stage.
