Two worlds, one journey: Cyprus meets Cambodia

More Than Just Travel: A People to People Connection

Press Release

Cyprus and Cambodia may be worlds apart, but they’re finding common ground in a shared mission: to redefine travel, trade, and cultural exchange. As Cambodia emerges as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing tourism and investment destinations, Cypriots are being invited to explore a land of ancient wonders, lush landscapes, and endless opportunities.

In 2023 alone, Cambodia welcomed over 5 million visitors, many drawn to the iconic Angkor Wat temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most awe-inspiring landmarks on Earth. But there’s so much more beyond the temples. Picture the crystal-clear waters and white-sand beaches of Koh Rong Island, the untouched beauty of the Cardamom Mountains, the "human capital development", or the vibrant culture that lives in every market, festival, and dance performance.

And that’s where Cyprus fits in.

Just as Cyprus has carved out a name for itself as a Mediterranean jewel, with its UNESCO-listed painted churches, ancient Paphos ruins, and world-class hospitality, Cambodia is offering a different kind of paradise, one that’s equally rich in history and soul. Together, the two countries have the potential to create something special: a bridge between Europe and Southeast Asia, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a deep appreciation for culture, education, and adventure.

The Air Link That Could Change Everything

A direct flight between the two nations may sound ambitious, but it’s not far-fetched. Cambodia is currently expanding its international footprint with the Techo International Airport, which will be one of the largest airports in the world once completed. A direct or even well-connected route between Phnom Penh and Larnaca could open the door for more Cypriot travelers to explore Southeast Asia and vice versa.
“Imagine a future where it's easier than ever to experience Angkor Wat or bring a taste of Cypriot culture to the streets of Phnom Penh,” says H.E. Salah Essa, Honorary Consul of Cyprus to Cambodia. “Tourism is just the beginning. This is about building something long-lasting.”

More Than Just Travel: A People-to-People Connection

Beyond sightseeing, this growing relationship is rooted in people, especially the next generation. In 2022, Cyprus hosted the Girl Guide Association of Cambodia, led by First Lady Dr. Pich Chanmony Hun Manet, in a landmark cultural exchange. It was more than a diplomatic visit; it was a sign of things to come.

Both countries are exploring opportunities for student exchanges, joint academic programs, and skills development partnerships, particularly in sectors like digital innovation, hospitality, maritime studies, and green energy. For Cypriot students looking to gain experience abroad, Cambodia offers a thriving, youthful, and rapidly developing environment. For Cambodian youth, Cyprus offers a gateway into the European Union.

Food, Festivals, and Friendship

And of course, no connection is complete without celebrating culture. From Khmer silk weaving and Apsara dance to Lefkara lace and Cypriot folk music, the artistic DNA of both countries has deep roots. Shared festivals, pop-up exhibitions, and even culinary collaborations, imagine Khmer curry served with Cypriot halloumi, are just some of the ways culture can bring these two nations even closer.

“We’re not just building tourism ties,” Salah Essa says. “We’re building friendships, through food, music, education, and business. This is the future of diplomacy.”

What’s in It for Cyprus?

For Cypriot businesses and investors, Cambodia is a rising star in the ASEAN region, a peaceful, stable, and investment-friendly country that offers access to a market of over 600 million consumers. With 100% foreign ownership allowed and favorable trade agreements in place, it’s a great time to explore new horizons.

Whether you’re a student looking for a new adventure, a business leader seeking fresh markets, or a traveler hungry for something different, Cambodia might just be your next great discovery.

Because from Phnom Penh to Nicosia, it’s not just a journey.
It’s a partnership with purpose.
