The Goethe-Institut Cyprus is kicking off a thought-provoking new film and discussion series titled “GoetheKino: Matters of Identity”, beginning Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Held on the last Wednesday of each month over a three-month period, the program will feature bold, conversation-starting films alongside engaging panel talks that explore themes of identity, belonging, and personal freedom.
This inaugural edition of GoetheKino will showcase three powerful films—“Talking about the Weather,” “Precious Ivie,” and “Sisi & I”—each tackling the complex interplay between self-identity and societal expectations. At the heart of the series is a desire to spark deep conversations and personal reflection.
Cultural expert Olga Koureli will host each session, joined every time by a different guest speaker, offering fresh perspectives and nuanced discussions tailored to each film’s themes.
The Films
April 30 – "Talking about the Weather" (Annika Pinske)
This film explores themes of self-determination and class. Clara, a 39-year-old philosophy PhD candidate, feels alienated from her rural German family, who struggle to understand her life choices. It’s a subtle yet powerful story about female bonds, emotional distance and connection, and the pursuit of independence. The screening will be followed by a discussion with historian and researcher Iliana Koulafeti.
May 28 – "Precious Ivie" (Sarah Blaßkiewitz)
A raw look at everyday racism and colorism, this film follows Ivy, an Afro-German woman living in Leipzig, whose world shifts when her half-sister Naomi arrives unexpectedly from Berlin. As Ivy confronts her father’s death and reconnects with her roots, she begins to question everything—from her nickname “Brownie” to her own self-image. After the screening, artist and social commentator Serap Kanay will lead the discussion.
June 25 – "Sisi & I" (Frauke Finsterwalder)
This modern reimagining of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) delves into freedom, loyalty, and the intricacies of female friendship. The rebellious Sisi finds a kindred spirit in her lady-in-waiting, Countess Irma. As their bond deepens, the outside world closes in, forcing them down a path that binds them forever. The screening will be followed by a talk with interdisciplinary performance artist Naya T. Karakosta.
