The Municipality of Amathus has voiced concerns over the Ministry of Welfare’s evolving plans to establish facilities for unaccompanied minors, though recent discussions suggest a shift in approach.
Amathus Mayor Kyriakos Xydias told local news outlet Vrotoselido that the Ministry’s plans had “undergone several changes over the past 15 months, creating tension in the area due to insufficient communication and lack of consideration for local concerns.”
Following a lengthy meeting on Monday with Deputy Minister of Welfare, Xydias acknowledged that, despite disagreements, the dialogue allowed the City Council’s stance to be heard. “We expressed our opposition, and, in turn, many aspects were clarified by the Deputy Minister,” he said.
Xydias added that the topic of migration, once central to the project, has been removed from the plan as it is now managed by a different ministry. The Welfare Ministry’s focus, he confirmed, is now solely on establishing facilities for minors under state protection.
