Press Release
The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit, the largest sustainable development conference in Cyprus, returns to Nicosia on June 4, 2026, under the central theme “Transition as a responsibility (not a trend),” bringing together leading voices from the fields of sustainability and innovation.
Among this year’s speakers is Professor Andreas Poullikkas, an energy systems expert and academic.
Professor Poullikkas will explore a major question facing Cyprus: could small nuclear reactors become part of the country’s future energy mix? In simple terms, he will explain what Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are, how they work, and whether they could realistically help Cyprus tackle high energy costs, energy storage challenges, and its dependence on imported fuels.
He will also outline both the advantages and disadvantages: on the one hand, cheaper and more stable electricity; on the other, concerns around safety, cost, and public acceptance. The discussion ties directly into the central theme of the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit, “Transition as a responsibility, not a trend,” raising the question of whether Cyprus is ready to consider bold but controversial solutions for its energy future.
The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit is presented by Altia.
