Applying for a travel visa could drain your bank account

Fraudsters target applicants by imitating official UK visa application platforms.

Police are alerting the public to a newly identified online scam targeting people applying for travel visas to foreign countries, after reports that fraudsters are stealing money through counterfeit application websites.

The warning follows a complaint filed on January 20 by an individual who was attempting to apply for a United Kingdom entry visa. Authorities discovered that the applicant had been directed to a fraudulent website designed to closely imitate the official UK government platform used for visa applications.

Believing the site to be legitimate, applicants are asked to complete the visa process by submitting personal information and banking details. This data is then exploited by scammers, who use it to gain unauthorized access to victims’ bank accounts and withdraw funds.

Police are urging citizens to remain vigilant when conducting online transactions, particularly when sharing sensitive personal or financial information. Members of the public are advised to confirm the authenticity of websites, individuals, or organizations before proceeding with any application or payment, and to communicate only through verified, official channels.

Authorities emphasize that increased awareness and careful verification are key to preventing further victims of this type of fraud.
