Attorney General George Savvidis and newly appointed Auditor General Andreas Papaconstantinou are determined to work closely together for a smooth and effective partnership. The two leaders met for the first time, along with Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelidis, to discuss how their teams can collaborate better to fight corruption and ensure the government runs efficiently.

Savvidis congratulated Papaconstantinou on his new role and emphasized that both of them are eager to work together. He pointed out that the Legal Service and the Audit Service share a common goal: to serve the public and protect the country’s interests. Savvidis added that by staying in constant contact, they aim to resolve any issues quickly and effectively.

Papaconstantinou agreed, saying that working together flawlessly is essential, especially when it comes to tackling corruption. He noted that their shared goal is to keep the Audit Service independent and make sure it has access to the information it needs to do its job properly.

A recent proposal by the chairman of the Parliamentary Audit Committee suggested that the Audit Service should be able to access government documents without needing approval from the Legal Service. Papaconstantinou hopes the two agencies can avoid new laws by coming to a mutual understanding.

Both officials acknowledged that disagreements may arise, given the complex and sensitive nature of their work. However, they’re confident that open communication will help resolve any issues before they escalate.

Savvidis clarified that while the appointment of Papaconstantinou marks a fresh start, the two institutions had always worked together, even during times of personal friction between officials. Now, with renewed commitment, they aim to strengthen their cooperation.

On the topic of the suspended former Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides, Savvidis explained that the court's decision was based on behavior, not competence, and encouraged the public to read the full ruling to understand the reasoning.

The two leaders also touched on upcoming reforms to the Legal and Audit Services. Papaconstantinou plans to consult with Savvidis on legal matters before presenting their ideas to the Minister of Justice.

Overall, the meeting marked a positive step toward improved cooperation, with both sides committed to working together for the good of Cyprus.
