Ministers back LGBTQI Strategy in Cyprus

Cabinet appoints Panayiotis Palates to lead LGBTQI National Strategy

Newsroom / CNA

The Cyprus Council of Ministers approved Wednesday the creation of a National Strategy focused on the LGBTQI community. The Commissioner for Citizens’ Rights, Panayiotis Palates, has been appointed as the coordinator for the preparation and implementation of this strategy.

Following the Cabinet meeting, Palates announced that an interministerial committee will oversee the strategy, with permanent representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Education, Interior, and Health. Depending on the committee’s agenda, representatives from other ministries will also be invited.

The non-governmental organization Accept-LGBT Cyprus, which advocates for LGBTQI rights in the country, will be member of the committee, as the only registered organization dedicated to this cause. Additionally, academic support will be provided by an academic who will be selected upon the recommendation of the Commissioner and approved by the Minister of Justice.

The Commissioner explained that the National Strategy will align Cyprus' legislation with that of the European Union. Its focus will be on combating discrimination, ensuring equality and safety, and building an inclusive society for LGBTQI individuals.
