Authorities await DNA results to identify victims of Limassol wildfire

The bodies of two people found in a burned vehicle during the Limassol wildfire remain unidentified, with authorities awaiting DNA test results to confirm their identities.

Police said forensic examinations of the bodies have been completed, but the remains are unrecognizable. Identification will be carried out through scientific testing. The vehicle in which the bodies were found is registered to a 77-year-old woman who had been reported missing.

According to information an article by 24news, DNA samples have been collected from relatives of the presumed victims.

The victims are believed to be an elderly couple who attempted to flee the wildfire but were unable to escape. Sources told 24news the couple was returning from their holiday cottage in the village of Sylikou. During the evacuation, they left the village, but their vehicle became trapped by the fire along the Monagri–Alassa road.

The bodies were discovered Wednesday night, shortly after 9 p.m., by Civil Defense crews responding to the wildfire. A team from the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department was dispatched to the scene and located a second body inside the same vehicle.

The vehicle was later transported to Limassol District Police Headquarters. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
