Baby girl’s body remains in Nicosia hospital morgue two years after death

Coroner issued burial order, but absence of relatives and ongoing court case over alleged neglect leaves infant in prolonged state of limbo.

More than two years after the tragic death of a three-month-old baby girl in Nicosia, her body is still being kept in the morgue of Nicosia General Hospital, despite a burial order issued by the coroner, highlighting a painful legal and procedural deadlock that has yet to be resolved.

The case dates back to July 28, 2024, when the infant was brought by ambulance to the Emergency Department of Nicosia General Hospital already dead. Doctors later noted worrying signs, including that the baby was underweight, wearing a soiled diaper, and had insect bites. The findings immediately triggered a police investigation.

The child’s 23-year-old father from Pakistan and 21-year-old mother from Greece were arrested and later charged with homicide and neglect of a minor. Court proceedings against both parents are still ongoing.

Despite the coroner issuing instructions for burial, the infant’s body has not been claimed. Speaking on Alpha Update, OKYPY spokesperson Pambos Charilaou said the situation is tied up in legal and administrative issues. He explained that when no relatives come forward to arrange a burial, responsibility can in some cases fall to religious authorities or the state, including church officials, that have facilities to carry out funerals.

Lawyer Christos Clerides also commented on the broader legal aspect, noting that in such cases the body itself is not considered evidence, but rather the official autopsy findings are what matter in court proceedings.

The situation has left the case in a sensitive and unresolved state, with legal processes still moving forward, but no closure yet for a life that ended far too soon.
