At this year’s Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit, tech enthusiasts and industry leaders gathered to hear from an inspiring speaker: Robbie Stamp, a notable producer and advocate for ethical artificial intelligence. Known for his work on "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," Stamp brought a unique perspective on the evolving role of technology in our lives.  You can watch the full interview below.

In an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the summit, I had the chance to talk with Stamp about his thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on creativity and society. His main message? We need to carefully consider what it means to be human in an increasingly digital world.

Stamp kicked off his presentation by posing a thought-provoking question: “Can an AI get goosebumps?” This simple query opened up a broader conversation about the emotional experiences that define humanity and how they differ from machines. "It’s important to think about what we’re really asking when we talk about AI,” he said. “Can something without a body ever feel what we feel?”

His insights didn’t stop there. Stamp emphasized the need for "radical humility" when it comes to technology. He pointed out that, like in his famous work, every species believes it plays a central role in the universe. "In a way, we’re all part of a bigger story," he explained. "But that doesn’t mean we should see ourselves as the stars of the show."

A big part of his message revolved around creativity. He highlighted the vital role of human connection and emotional understanding in creative processes. "We must recognize that creativity isn't just about data and algorithms; it's about the human experience," Stamp said. "Machines can assist us, but they can’t replace the feelings and insights that come from being human."

During our conversation, he touched on the ethical implications of AI. Stamp is involved with governments, helping them navigate the complex moral landscape surrounding technology. He believes that the questions we ask about AI today—like whether it can feel pain or have agency—are crucial for shaping regulations and frameworks in the future.

“AI will change our lives, but it’s up to us to decide how that happens,” he asserted. "We need to ensure that the technology serves humanity rather than the other way around."

As the event came to a close, Stamp left the audience with a challenge: to think deeply about the future we want to create. “In a world where technology is rapidly evolving, let’s not forget what it means to be human,” he said.

The Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit continues to be a platform for vital conversations about technology's role in our society, and Robbie Stamp’s compelling insights have certainly added to that dialogue.

As we navigate the digital landscape ahead, his words resonate: let’s celebrate our humanity while embracing the changes that technology brings.
