President Christodoulides' phone call to Kostas Kadis came just days before the official announcement that Kadis would be the Republic of Cyprus's nominee for European Commissioner. Initially, Kadis was asked to keep the news confidential until the official announcement on August 30, but the announcement was later postponed to August 19.

According to reports, there was no prior discussion between the two men on the matter, though they are known to have a close friendship. Kadis, a former minister, publicly supported Christodoulides' candidacy in the second round of the presidential election.

Before confirming his acceptance, Kadis consulted with his family, who fully supported him. He also informed Frederick University, where he has served as a professor and Deputy Chairman of the University Council since May 2023, just before the official announcement.

During their conversation, President Christodoulides informed Kadis that the selection was made based on criteria set by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Kadis's extensive experience in various institutional roles—including as Minister of Health, Chairman of the Technical Committee for the Environment, Minister of Education and Culture, and Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment—was a key factor. His experience includes attending and coordinating meetings with European ministers and officials, as well as his academic career.

Stella Kyriakides, the outgoing EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, reportedly expressed her intention to support Kadis by sharing her knowledge and experience.

The announcement of a new Commissioner for the Mediterranean region, which von der Leyen introduced, is seen as directly related to Kadis's appointment. This role is significant for Cyprus, and Christodoulides has discussed it with von der Leyen. Kadis is expected to face a major challenge, given his previous work on the Action Plan to address climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East during his tenure as minister.

Following the call and briefing from von der Leyen, Christodoulides is set to send a formal letter to provide written details on Cyprus's proposal. Kadis is anticipated to meet with European Commission officials for private discussions around late August or early September before receiving a final decision.

Kadis has already had a phone conversation with Kyriakides, who publicly wished him well. A meeting between them is expected soon, and Kyriakides has expressed her intention to assist Kadis by offering her expertise and support.
