Cyprus braces for water shortfall in 2026 as government sets lower supply levels

Council of Ministers approves plan leaving domestic water provision about 10% below expected demand.

The Cypriot government has approved a water supply plan for 2026 that is expected to fall short of what consumers will need, setting the stage for potential restrictions during the year.

According to the decision adopted by the Council of Ministers, domestic water allocations will be roughly 10% below projected demand. The plan was put forward by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and keeps supply levels unchanged from those distributed in 2024, despite higher current requirements.

Officials say the policy is based on an assessment of reservoir reserves and the output capacity of desalination plants, including additional units anticipated to be delivered and brought online in the coming months. Under this framework, around 104 million cubic meters of water will be made available for household and general use throughout the year.

With supply not expected to fully meet consumption, authorities are placing increasing emphasis on conservation measures. The minister in charge, Maria Panayiotou, has argued that water overuse remains a significant problem and is urging the public to adopt more responsible habits.

The ministry’s Director General, Andreas Grigoriou, said the decision reflects current resource limitations and planning assumptions, warning that without improvements, the reduced allocation could lead to water cuts.
