Cyprus expects hundreds of megawatts of energy storage by 2027

Minister says battery storage expansion will strengthen the electricity grid and support greater use of solar energy.

Cyprus expects to have several hundred megawatts of electricity storage capacity connected to the grid by the end of 2027, according to Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michalis Damianos.

Speaking before a high-level workshop organised by the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) on reducing electricity costs, Damianos said the expansion of energy storage will strengthen the country's electricity network and support the increasing use of renewable energy.

He explained that the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) has already signed contracts for its own battery storage facilities, with the equipment expected to arrive in January 2027. The first 120 megawatts are scheduled to be installed before the summer of that year.

Damianos said he expects storage capacity to reach several hundred megawatts by the close of 2027. He added that the additional infrastructure will allow more solar power to be integrated into Cyprus' electricity mix while improving the reliability of the system.

The minister also commented on a letter sent by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA), confirming that authorities are examining whether Article 34 should be activated. The provision allows for the rapid installation of conventional electricity generation units when necessary. However, he said the Transmission System Operator has advised that no electricity supply shortages are expected during this summer.

Asked about fuel prices, Damianos said Cyprus remains affected by international market conditions, including developments in the Middle East. He recalled that fuel prices had previously climbed to very high levels before easing, adding that future price movements depend on factors outside Cyprus' control.
