Some communities across Cyprus were left without the customary civil defence sirens on Wednesday morning during the annual remembrance of the 15 July 1974 coup, following technical problems affecting the system.
The interruption was linked to faults in the Civil Defence's ageing siren network, according to the Municipality of South Nicosia-Idalion, which informed residents about the issue after receiving reports that no warning signal had been heard in the area.
The municipality said the failure was caused by problems with the outdated infrastructure used to operate the sirens.
The same issue was also reported in parts of Paphos, where the commemorative sirens likewise failed to sound.
The sirens are activated each year to mark the anniversary of the coup of 15 July 1974, an event that remains a defining moment in Cyprus' modern history.
