Did you know? The Beaufort Wind Scale, which we use to describe wind strength, was actually invented in the early 1800s by a British naval officer who wanted sailors to stop arguing about how windy it was. Fast forward to today, and we’re still using it, because who doesn’t love a good, old-fashioned 5 to 6 Beaufort breeze?
As for today, it’s a bit of a mixed bag from the sky. We’re under the influence of mild low pressure, which means partly cloudy skies and a chance of light rain early on, nothing to cancel your plans over. You’ll also notice some light dust in the air, so maybe take it easy if you’ve got allergies.
Winds will be coming in hot, well, brisk, to be precise, from the southwest to northwest, ranging from moderate to strong (that’s 4 to 6 Beaufort if you're keeping score). The sea is starting off a little rough and will get rougher as the day goes on, especially on the windward side later in the afternoon.
Temperatures will feel pleasant overall, peaking around 24°C in the interior and along the south and east coasts, slightly cooler in the west and north at 21°C, and a crisp 15°C up in the mountains.
Tonight, skies clear up, but the winds don’t let up just yet. Expect strong to very strong gusts from the southwest to west. The sea remains restless, ranging from slightly rough to very wavy, depending on where you are. As for temperatures, they’ll drop to around 11°C inland and on the southern and eastern coasts, a bit milder at 13°C on the western and northern coasts, and just 2°C in the high mountains, where patchy frost may form. Yep, spring still has a chilly sense of humor.
Looking ahead:
- Thursday: A bit more cloud cover here and there and a noticeable dip in temperatures; don’t be surprised if it feels a little nippy.
- Friday: Expect scattered rain and maybe even a rogue thunderstorm or two. Up in Troodos, sleet or snow could make a brief appearance.
- Saturday: Back to partly cloudy skies, with temps holding steady.
So, keep that light jacket handy and maybe avoid the windward beaches this afternoon. Otherwise, it’s a pretty decent spring day, by Cyprus standards, at least!
