The Supreme Constitutional Court of Cyprus on Sunday rejected a request by Judge Doria Varosiotou to refer a legal question to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), ruling that it is not necessary at this stage.
Varosiotou had asked the referral over whether there is a clear procedural framework governing the termination of her appointment, a matter her legal team called vital for judicial independence and compliance with EU law. The Supreme Judicial Council, however, maintained that a sufficient legal framework already exists, making a referral unnecessary.
The court’s decision was announced by Supreme Constitutional Judicial Council President Antonis Liatsos.
The case will now proceed to a full hearing on its merits on November 22, 2025, at 10:30 a.m.
Background: Varosiotou claims she was effectively terminated due to her controversial ruling in the Thanasis Nikolaou case, a high-profile matter that has stirred debate about the independence of the judiciary in Cyprus.
