Scooters could be kicked off Cyprus roads entirely if a new bill proposed by DIPA MP Marinos Mousiouttas becomes law. The legislation targets what Mousiouttas calls “widespread misuse” of scooters that puts riders and pedestrians at risk.
Under the proposed rules, riders could face fines up to €1,000, up to three months in prison, or both. Parents of children under 14 who allow their kids to ride would also be held accountable. Rental companies and their operators could lose their licenses and face penalties up to €5,000 or six months behind bars.
Current rules allow scooters on roads with speed limits up to 30 km/h, cycle paths, and certain pedestrian areas approved by municipalities, provided riders are over 14, wear helmets, and don reflective clothing at night.
The bill will go to the Transport Committee soon for detailed discussion. Mousiouttas has repeatedly warned that the growing number of violations and accidents made the crackdown necessary. “The situation is problematic,” he said, “and the safety of Cypriot streets must come first.”
