Cyprus Masters make an impressive splash at international swim competition

The seven-person team secured 15 golds, 6 silvers, and 1 bronze

The Cyprus Masters Swimming Team made an impressive splash at the Second International Damini Swimming Tournament in Bulgaria, securing a total of 15 golds, 6 silvers, and 1 bronze. The competition, which saw athletes of varying ages compete, highlighted the strength and versatility of Cyprus’ swimmers across different age groups.

In the men’s competition, the team’s performance spanned the 35-39, 60-64, and 70-74 age groups, with standout swimmers in each. Costas Hailis, competing in the 35-39 category, proved to be one of the team’s top performers. Hailis won 3 gold medals and 2 silvers, excelling in the 50m Backstroke and 200m Backstroke, with his times earning him 418 and 395 FINA points, respectively. He also took home silver in both the 200m Free and 400m Free events, making his contribution vital to the team's success.

In the 60-64 age group, Pambos Panagidis led the way, capturing 4 golds and 2 silvers. Charalampos dominated the breaststroke events, winning the 50m, 100m, and 200m Breaststroke. His win in the 50m Breaststroke, with a time of 35.04 seconds, earned him 406 FINA points, a testament to his mastery of the stroke.

Meanwhile, in the 70-74 age group, Larrys Fylaktou continued to show his prowess with 4 golds and 4 silvers. His strong performances in the 50m Free and 100m Free, where he clocked in at 28.90 seconds and 1:06.91, respectively, helped cement Cyprus Masters’ dominance in the competition. Fylaktou also triumphed in breaststroke events, showcasing the depth of talent across age groups.

The men’s team also shone in the relay events, with the 200m Medley Relay victory underscoring their strength in team competition.

On the women’s side, Cyprus Masters was represented in the 50-59 age group by Kostantina Chatzigeorgiou, who proved to be the team’s standout swimmer. Chatzigeorgiou earned 1 gold, 6 silvers, and 1 bronze. Her gold medal came in the 200m Breaststroke, with a winning time of 3:49.71. She also earned silver in several other events, including the 50m Free (36.70 seconds), 100m Free, and 50m Fly, making her one of the most consistent performers of the tournament.

Aleksandra Saridou also contributed to the women’s success, picking up 2 silvers and 1 bronze, with strong performances in the 50m Free and 50m Fly events.

By the end of the tournament, the Cyprus Masters team had built an impressive tally of medals, with the men’s side contributing 12 golds and 4 silvers, while the women earned 3 silvers and 1 bronze. The team’s success was a clear indication of the skill and dedication of the athletes, with standout performances across all age groups.
