Cyprus is stepping up efforts to clean up its police force, Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris said Thursday, following the arrest of two officers over off-duty assaults.
One officer in Larnaca faces allegations of a beating, while a special officer in Paphos is being investigated for a poorly handled assault case. Authorities say both incidents are being taken seriously and are under formal investigation.
“The cleansing of the police is moving forward alongside its work against crime and illegal activities,” Fytiris said. “This helps strengthen the public’s trust in the police."
At the same time, he praised the majority of officers for their daily professionalism and dedication, noting that recent operations have dealt “substantial blows against crime and illegality” across the island.
Fytiris stressed that the government is determined to keep enforcing discipline and accountability while also boosting the effectiveness of Cyprus’ police, all in the name of making residents feel safer and more confident in law enforcement.
