Cyprus has pledged €300,000 in humanitarian assistance to Lebanon, as the island nation responds to the worsening situation affecting civilians there.
During a phone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides expressed strong concern over recent attacks impacting civilians and essential infrastructure, which have led to significant casualties. He described the situation as deeply troubling and warned of the risk of further destabilization in an already fragile environment.
According to government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Cyprus conveyed full solidarity with Lebanon’s government and people. The Cypriot leadership stressed that actions causing widespread harm to civilians cannot be justified and risk escalating tensions further.
The financial aid will be delivered through CyprusAid, with funds directed to UNICEF Lebanon and WFP Lebanon, both of which are actively supporting affected populations on the ground.
Christodoulides also highlighted the importance of using the current ceasefire as a chance to reduce tensions and push forward diplomatic solutions aimed at long-term stability. He pointed to the critical role of UNIFIL and emphasized that its mandate, along with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, must be fully respected to maintain security in the region.
Reaffirming Cyprus’s position, the president called for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside an immediate halt to hostilities by all sides. He also reiterated Cyprus’s readiness to provide further assistance if needed.
The two leaders additionally discussed broader regional developments and potential ways Cyprus could contribute to stabilizing the situation, including through its current role within the Council of the European Union. Cyprus has indicated it will continue supporting Lebanon’s efforts to manage the ongoing crisis, particularly in areas affecting everyday living conditions, while acknowledging the work of international organizations delivering aid.
