Cyprus recorded a successful start to the new year in skeet shooting, winning three medals across two international Grand Prix competitions held in Doha, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
At the Amir International Grand Prix in Doha, Cyprus secured one gold and one bronze medal through the performances of two junior athletes, Andreas Pontikis and Markos Kontopoulos.
Pontikis qualified for the Junior Men’s Skeet final with a score of 111/125. He went on to win the gold medal after defeating Kazakhstan’s Vladislav Zavodilenko in the final, scoring 34/36 compared to 33/36 for his opponent.
Kontopoulos won the bronze medal after qualifying for the final with the highest score of 118/125, a score also achieved by British shooter Charles Worrall.
Cyprus also added a third medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Panayiota Andreou won bronze in the Women’s Skeet event.

Andreou qualified for the final with the second-best score of 119/125, matching Finland’s Marjut Heinonen, who later won the gold medal. Andreou scored 27 hits out of 32 targets in the final to secure third place.
Heinonen won gold with 35 hits, missing only one target, while American shooter Samantha Simonton won silver with 31 hits. Simonton had qualified for the final with a score of 120/125.
