Cyprus warns of a growing counterfeit halloumi flood from Latin America

Environmental Movement says EU–Mercosur deal fails to guarantee protection for Cyprus’s iconic cheese.

Cyprus’s Environmental Movement has warned that halloumi could face increased competition from counterfeit products if the EU moves forward with the Mercosur trade agreement without stronger protections for geographical indications.

In a statement issued ahead of a planned protest this Saturday, the organization argued that the agreement could have serious consequences for Cyprus’s economy and food security. It stressed that safeguarding halloumi, along with the broader primary production sector, is essential for the country’s long-term economic stability.

The group also echoed concerns raised by farmers and livestock breeders in Cyprus and across Europe, who fear that the deal will open the door to large volumes of low-cost meat and agricultural goods from Latin American countries. According to the statement, these products may be produced using pesticides that have been banned in the European Union for decades, creating unfair conditions for local producers.

Describing the proposed agreement as one-sided, the Environmental Movement claimed it mainly benefits major corporations exporting technology and services, while placing agricultural communities at a disadvantage. Without major revisions, it warned, the deal could accelerate the decline of rural areas in Cyprus.

The organization said it supports the stance of agricultural groups opposing the current terms of the agreement and urged the public to join Saturday’s demonstration. The march is expected to begin at Eleftheria Square and continue to the EU House and the Presidential Palace.
