Drivers warned: Complete Takata airbag recall by October 3 or lose your car

MOT, registration at stake; thousands of vehicles still under recall.

Cyprus drivers have just days to act on the Takata airbag recall, or risk having their vehicles grounded, losing their MOT, and even seeing their registrations canceled.

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis warned on ALPHA KALIMERA that cars not repaired by October 3 will have their technical inspection certificates invalidated. Owners who wait until after the deadline will need to re-pass the MOT once the airbags are replaced before driving again.

Approximately 19,000 vehicles remain under recall in Cyprus, officials said, making this one of the country’s largest road safety reminders in recent years. The recalled Takata airbags have been linked globally to injuries and deaths, underscoring the importance of swift action.

Meanwhile, the cost of getting a vehicle MOT in Cyprus is set to rise. Fees for passenger cars and light trucks will go up from €35 to €43 at IKTEO centers, and from €40 to €46 at KEMO centers. The Transport Ministry says the increase is needed to cover rising administrative and operating costs and to keep inspection centers sustainable.
