A Nicosia court on Tuesday ordered an eight-day detention for a 30-year-old Greek Cypriot inmate suspected of killing a 35-year-old foreign prisoner at the Central Prisons.
The suspect appeared in court Tuesday morning, was informed of the charges, and was told police were seeking an eight-day detention while investigations continue. He consulted with his lawyer and did not contest the request.
According to Nicosia CID investigator Gennadios Ioannou, the incident occurred on the night of December 7 in Wing 4 of the prison. After a brief altercation between the two inmates, the victim was taken to the guards’ office, where he collapsed and later died. The victim had a visible injury beneath his left eye. Authorities have already collected CCTV footage and eyewitness statements.
So far, 12 statements have been recorded, with at least 30 more expected. Forensic and scientific analyses are ongoing, along with further questioning of the suspect and scene reconstructions to clarify the exact chain of events.
The court stressed that detention was necessary given the seriousness of the alleged crime and the early stage of the investigation to prevent interference with witnesses and allow evidence-gathering to continue uninterrupted.
