An elderly pedestrian was killed on Thursday in a road accident in Limassol, when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle as he was trying to cross the street.

According to police, 85-year-old Yiorgos Theodorou was trying to cross the street on Promachon Eleftherias Avenue on Thursday evening around 8:45pm.

Theodorou, a Limassol resident, was trying to cross the street when a car driven by a 21-year-old male struck the elderly man under circumstances still pending investigation. The impact caused the elderly man to strike the windshield of the car before landing on the asphalt several metres away.

The driver and his passenger, both described as 21-year-old Syrian males, exited the vehicle and walked away but returned to the scene several minutes later

An ambulance rushed Theodorou to the Emergency Room at Limassol General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

According to local media, the driver and his passenger, both described as 21-year-old Syrian males, had exited the vehicle after the incident and walked away but returned to the scene several minutes later.

Police said the driver, along with the passenger who is the owner of the vehicle, were both detained on arrest warrants but no specific charges were listed. A Brethalyzer test administered to the driver showed no presence of alcohol, while a press officer told Knews the arrests were standard procedure following a fatal accident in order to conduct an investigation.

An official police report said Theodorou was trying to cross the street while local media said the elderly man was trying to use a pedestrian crossing at the time of the incident.
