European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have cautiously congratulated Donald Trump on his claimed U.S. election victory. Macron and others expressed willingness to work with Trump but made it clear they would defend Europe’s own interests. Some European leaders, particularly from the far-right, openly celebrated Trump’s win, creating mixed reactions across Europe.
Macron’s message on X (formerly Twitter) was measured compared to enthusiastic responses from Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other right-wing politicians. Macron stressed a commitment to "peace and prosperity" but also made it clear he would work to protect European values.
Many European officials are uneasy about Trump’s return. They remember his last term, when he was critical of NATO, showed little support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia, and largely ignored climate change issues. European leaders worry Trump could weaken ties between the U.S. and Europe, leaving them more vulnerable.
Trade is another concern. Trump has said he might impose a 10% tariff on all imports and a much higher 60% on goods from China, a move that could harm global trade and increase costs in Europe. Economists warn this could be especially tough on European businesses, potentially triggering new trade conflicts.
Hungary’s Orban, one of Trump’s strongest supporters, quickly posted a celebratory message, calling Trump’s victory “a much-needed win for the world.” He also hinted that Trump’s presidency could push Europe to rethink its support for Ukraine. Other far-right leaders across Europe echoed his excitement, saying the win was a victory for everyday Americans over Hollywood elites and for policies against mass immigration.
In the wake of Trump’s victory, European leaders like NATO Chief Mark Rutte and Germany’s Olaf Scholz are calling for unity across Europe to stay strong. While Europe prepares for a possibly bumpy relationship with the U.S., they are hopeful for cooperation but are ready to protect their own interests if needed.
This is how some of the world leaders congratulated Trump:
Keir Starmer - British Prime Minister:
"I look forward to working with you in the years ahead. As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.
