The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment has issued a warning about the heightened risk of forest fires due to very strong winds expected from Friday through Sunday. Wind gusts are anticipated to reach up to 6 on the Beaufort scale, which increases the likelihood of fire outbreaks and rapid spread.
In its announcement, the department emphasized that firefighting efforts could be extremely difficult, if not impossible, if a fire is not contained in its early stages. It urged the public to exercise caution and avoid activities that could ignite a fire.
Specifically, the department advised against using heat or spark-producing tools, such as grinders, oxy-cutting equipment, and welding devices. It reiterated that using such tools in areas with dry grass is almost certain to start a fire.
Additionally, the department reminded the public that burning grass, branches, or trash is prohibited. The disposal of cigarette butts and lighting fires for cooking or warming food is only permitted within designated grills at picnic sites.
The announcement also called for attention to preventive measures to avoid fires caused by the exhausts of various outdoor generators or water pumps.
Furthermore, it is illegal to light fires within state forests or within a 2 km radius of their boundaries without a permit. Violating this regulation is an offense under the Forest Law of 2012 and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to €50,000, or both.
Anyone who notices smoke or fire is urged to immediately contact the nearest Forestry Station or call 1407 without delay.
