A fire believed to have been sparked by overhead cables in strong winds tore through a residence and metalworks shop in the Nicosia district community of Marki late Friday, damaging two vehicles and rattling a quiet neighborhood.

The Fire Service said the blaze, which began in nearby tree branches, was likely caused by Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) cables brought down or compromised by gusty winds in the area. The flames spread quickly, fueled by dry vegetation and flammable materials around the property.

A man who was inside the home at the time managed to escape without injury after attempting to battle the flames himself. Despite his efforts, the fire spread rapidly, overpowering his attempts to contain it before firefighters arrived.

In a post on X, Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis said the fire caused “significant” damage to both the residential part of the premises and the adjoining metal workshop. Three oxygen cylinders on site also posed a threat, but firefighters were able to secure them safely.

Four fire engines from Nicosia stations and four additional engines from the Department of Forests responded, bringing a total of 12 personnel to the scene. Forest Department crews assisted with extinguishing flames outside the premises and supplied water to frontline units.

Firefighters used hoses and breathing gear to bring the blaze under control, working into the evening to prevent further spread. No injuries were reported.
