BirdLife Cyprus has issued a public warning following reports that birdwatchers have been entering Akrotiri Marsh despite an ongoing closure.
The organization stated that the wetland remains off-limits due to precautionary measures linked to Foot-and-Mouth Disease. Any entry into the area at this time increases the risk of spreading the disease, which could have serious consequences.
According to BirdLife Cyprus, an outbreak at the marsh would be devastating for both agriculture and the environment. The local cattle breed that grazes the area plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of the wetland ecosystem. Their presence supports habitat conditions that are vital for birdlife and other species.
Akrotiri Marsh is recognized as an internationally important wetland, attracting migratory birds and supporting diverse wildlife. Disruption to its ecological balance could cause lasting damage.
BirdLife Cyprus is calling on the public to fully respect the closure and avoid entering the site under any circumstances.
