Zelensky to address EU leaders in Cyprus in person, shifting from planned video call

Ukrainian president to brief summit on war developments as Ayia Napa meeting gains added weight.

In a last-minute shift that raises the stakes of this week’s EU gathering, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now expected to appear in person in Cyprus, rather than joining by video as originally planned.

According to officials cited by CNA, Zelensky will deliver a live briefing to European leaders during the informal EU summit taking place Thursday and Friday.

The Ukrainian leader had initially been scheduled to address the meeting via video conference, updating heads of state on the latest developments in Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. But his physical presence now adds a stronger political and symbolic dimension to the talks.

Just last week, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Rauna had said Zelensky was invited but expected to join remotely ahead of a working dinner in Ayia Napa on April 23.

That plan has now changed.

His appearance comes at a critical moment in the war, with Ukraine continuing to push for military, financial and political support from its European partners.
