A senior citizen who was vacationing in Cyprus died at a Limassol beach Friday after she became unconscious during a swim.
Police say an 83-year-old permanent resident of France, who was originally Greek Cypriot, was spending her holidays in on the island with her 88-year-old husband.
The two of them went to Governor’s Beach in the morning, when around 10am the woman became unconscious while swimming in the water.
She was taken to shore for first aid but resuscitation efforts failed, according to initial accounts.
An ambulance transported the woman to Limassol General Hospital where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.
Media reports suggested the woman died of natural causes, while the exact cause will be determined following an autopsy on Monday.
