In a move aimed at bolstering the country's social safety net, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced a nationwide expansion of the Neighbourhood Social Workers' Programme.

The program, co-funded by the European Union, positions social workers in communities across the island nation. This expansion, slated to begin in May, will see 32 social workers and 10 supervisors deployed to 106 municipalities and communities through 29 programs.

President Christodoulides emphasized the program's significance in creating "a genuine welfare state." He highlighted its role in bridging the gap between citizens and the government, particularly those relying on social services.

The initiative builds upon a successful pilot program and aligns with Christodoulides' governance goals. Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Marilena Evangelou underscored the program's vital role in local communities, praising its ability to address local issues and foster collaboration between social services, authorities, and local institutions.

The program, co-funded by the European Union, positions social workers in communities across the island nation.

Financial backing for the program comes from a €48 million project focused on restructuring social welfare services, with 60% co-funded by the EU. This project, spanning 2021-2027, tackles the high demand for social services, with an average of 250-270 daily visits to local offices in 2023 alone.

The Neighbourhood Social Workers' Programme represents a €11 million portion of the restructuring project. The initiative is welcomed by both the Union of Cyprus Communities and the Union of Municipalities, who see it as a positive step towards strengthening social services through local government collaboration.

This nationwide expansion signifies Cyprus' commitment to enhancing its social welfare system and ensuring accessibility for citizens across the country.
