The Greek Cypriot couple who had been unlawfully held in the occupied areas of Cyprus for five months returned to the free areas late on Monday night, bringing an end to a case that had caused widespread concern.

The couple, Andreas and Anna Kyprianou, were the last of five Greek Cypriots to remain in detention after being arrested on 19 July. The other three detainees had been released earlier.

In a statement, Keravnos Strovolou described the development as a moment of deep relief and emotional release, marking the end of a prolonged and painful ordeal. The organization stressed that the couple had been held on the basis of unfounded and fabricated allegations, without legal justification.

Keravnos expressed gratitude to all those who worked toward securing the couple’s release, acknowledging the diplomatic efforts, pressure, and initiatives that contributed to the outcome. Special recognition was also given to members of the Turkish Cypriot community who, despite operating under the occupation regime, showed solidarity and actively supported the detained Greek Cypriots.

The couple’s return closes a chapter that highlighted ongoing tensions and legal concerns surrounding arrests and detentions in the occupied areas of Cyprus.
