The beautiful and ecologically rich Akamas Peninsula is facing new environmental concerns, as two illegal refreshment facilities have been spotted within its protected Natura 2000 areas. The Department of Environment has called on the Municipality of Akamas to take immediate action to remove these structures, which are operating without the proper permits.
According to reports from "Phileleftheros" and environmental organizations like the Cyprus Foundation for Environmental Protection and Terra Cypria, the two refreshment rooms are located in sensitive zones within the Special Conservation Zone (SCZ) and Special Protection Zone (SPA) of Akamas. These areas are meant to preserve the peninsula's unique natural beauty and biodiversity.
The structures, which are situated in locations such as "Platanos" and near Lara-Toxeftra beach, were found to be affecting the conservation objectives set for the area. The Environment Department confirmed the illegal presence of these structures after conducting inspections, highlighting that they threaten the ecological balance of a region that is home to rare species and valuable habitats.
The Department has now urged the Municipality of Akamas to take swift action and remove these illegal refreshment rooms. The authorities emphasized the importance of upholding the law to ensure that Akamas remains protected from such unauthorized developments.
As this issue unfolds, it's clear that maintaining the balance between development and environmental protection in Akamas will require both effective enforcement and public awareness. The Municipality of Akamas is now under pressure to act, and with the Department of Environment on alert, it’s expected that measures will be taken to prevent further illegalities from cropping up in this precious part of Cyprus.
