Police have arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with a shooting at a company’s offices in Limassol early Tuesday, a case authorities say stems from loan sharking.
The Limassol District Court on Thursday approved an eight-day detention order for the suspect following a lengthy hearing that included objections from his defense lawyer.
Investigators said the incident is linked to a personal loan. The 58-year-old company owner had borrowed €400,000 from the suspect between 2021 and 2022. The suspect allegedly demanded €1 million in interest, with repayment scheduled by the end of 2023.
The complainant told police he repaid the €400,000 principal and an additional €200,000 toward interest. When he requested extra time to settle the debt, the suspect reportedly tacked on more interest, sparking the dispute that escalated to threats and, ultimately, violence.
Police also noted that the 43-year-old faces a separate case in Nicosia, involving allegations of threats and assault against a 53-year-old man.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence and search for two individuals who were on a motorcycle and fired at the company offices. Eleven bullets struck the building’s glass door during the attack.
